Changing electronic lock batteries in Nebula Beta

Overview

This section aims to explain how to change batteries on Salto electronic locks and the implications this may have in the software.

If low batteries are indicated in the software, you need to make sure they are replaced as soon as possible.

Low battery iconWhen devices are marked with the 'Low battery' icon, you should replace the batteries as soon as possible.

The locks themselves can also indicate low batteries. For example, if a lock blinks red four times and emits four long beeps before unlocking when a key is presented, it means the batteries are low.

If you replace an electronic lock's batteries, you need to reconfigure the device using the Nebula app to ensure the lock reports the correct battery status.

How can I change the batteries of cylinder locks?

Cylinder-type locks generally refer to locks like the Salto Neo Cylinder.

Replacing batteries of cylinder-type locks requires special tooling and is typically done by a certified installer. If you don't know who your installer is or want to find a new one, contact Salto.

If you are equipped with the proper tool:

  • Use the cylinder tool to open the head of the cylinder.
  • Remove the batteries, but be careful not to damage the shielding material.
  • Replace the batteries with 4 new LR1 Alkaline ones.
  • After inserting the last battery, you should hear 2 beeps.
  • If you do not hear the beeps, check if the batteries have been inserted correctly.
  • If all is working, place back the cylinder head without damaging the electronics and connections.
  • If the cylinder head is back in place, lock it again using the cylinder tool.

How can I change the batteries of escutcheon locks?

Escutcheon-type locks generally refer to Salto locks like the XS4 Original+ or XS4 One.

To change the batteries of your escutcheon-type lock, do the following:

  • Remove the back panel of the escutcheon. Please note that the screw at the bottom must be turned inwards to be able to remove the cover and outwards to mount it in place again. The screw stays attached to the lock.
  • Once you have removed the back panel and the small cover of the battery compartment itself, replace the three batteries with new ones.
  • When you put in the batteries, you should hear two short beeps. If you don't hear the beeps, check if you inserted the batteries correctly.
  • After this, put back the cover for the battery compartment and the back panel.

Recommended batteries for escutcheon-type locks are Duracell Plus Power AAA (MN2400), Simply Duracell AAA (MN2400), Varta High Energy AAA (04903), Varta Longlife AAA (04103) and Varta Industrial AAA (04003).

How do I unlock my door if the battery status is low?

You will be notified before the lock is starting to run out of battery.

The battery status of an electronic lock can be either normal, low or flat. It is highly recommended to change the battery when the low' notification displays.

Once the batteries are approaching low, each opening on the lock will first blink red twice before opening as normal.

If the battery is flat, the only way to unlock the door is by attaching an external battery pack. This can be obtained from your Salto installer. After attaching the battery pack, it will operate as normal.

Does the lock need to be reconfigured after changing the batteries?

Yes. After changing the batteries, you need to reconfigure the device using the Nebula app to ensure the lock is updated correctly.
