Lock information and settings

What is the maximum number of locks and repeaters that I can add to one IQ?

Any IQ can hold a total of 16 locks at any given time.

These locks can be attached directly to the IQ or through repeaters. A total of 6 repeaters can be added to an IQ, either directly to the IQ or in a linked configuration (IQ > Repeater > Repeater) to a maximum of 3 layers.

Regardless of the number of repeaters, the maximum number of locks remains 16 per IQ.

Please note: If you choose to attach a repeater, no lock can be attached directly to the IQ anymore. They will have to be attached to the repeater instead.

What types of locks are available for SALTO KS?

There are a variety of locks that are compatible with SALTO KS. In general, there are 3 types of locks that can be used:

Cylinders: There are various cylinders available with different inside mechanisms, compatible with a wide range of doors and locking systems.

Escutcheons: These are specially suitable for in-house doors, for example for individual offices, meeting or storage rooms.

Wall readers: Suitable for high traffic and/or automatic doors, most used for automatic (rolling) doors and main entrance doors.

To check which type of lock is most suitable for your situation, please contact an installer who will be more than happy to assess what the best solution is for your office or home.

How do I add a lock to my SALTO KS site?

In order to add a new lock to your existing site, follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to your account as site owner or site admin
  2. Click on Site, then Hardware, then click the Action button next to the right IQ or repeater
  3. Click on the +lock button
  4. Fill in the name and Device ID of your new lock. The Device ID can be found on the sticker on the lock itself after you take it out of the box.
  5. Enter the code generated in your mobile app for the IQ when prompted
  6. After confirming, you will be asked to present the maintenance card to the lock.

When your lock blinks green and beeps, it is successfully attached.

The lock is not connecting to the IQ, What should I do?

A lock can only be attached to an IQ if it is within range (depending on the local situation this is a maximum of 7 to 10 meters) and if it is not attached to another IQ.

To check if the lock is ready to be attached, present the construction card to it. The lock should open. If this does not work, SALTO Systems Support might be able to tell you what IQ the lock is attached to.

If the lock was not properly detached previously, the only option you have is to attach the lock back to the original IQ and detach it properly again.

The green light on the lock is blinking but the door won't open, what could be the reason?

The fact that the lock's light blinks green means that the problem you are facing is not caused by the misconfiguration of access rules. It is trying to let you in.

Please reach out to SALTO Systems Support since there may be multiple possible reasons why a door won't open in such a situation.

Why is there a red light blinking on my lock?

If the lock blinks red and makes an audible deny buzz right away, and does not open, you are being denied access based on the currently defined access rules.

If the lock blinks red a couple of times and then opens, the batteries are almost empty.

Please make sure they are replaced as soon as possible to prevent being locked out in the near future. If you feel these 2 scenarios do not apply, please reach out to our SALTO Systems Support team.

Do locks operate ordinarily in cold weather conditions?

To find out more about how our locks perform in harsh weather conditions, please investigate our Product page or contact our SALTO Systems Support for information.

What are 'Lock Settings'?

Lock Settings define the behavior of the lock in certain situations. The following settings are possible:

Open time: This indicates the amount of time that the lock will stay unlocked until it is locked again. The range can be set from 1 second to 240 seconds.

Easy office mode: In office mode, the lock stays unlocked, but now in easy office mode, it is combined with a set schedule. When a lock is in easy office mode and the timeframe ends, it will lock itself automatically.

Offline access based on audit trail: This setting is configurable to the amount of days you wish to allow the lock to look back in its audit log to check for a successful opening using the credential provided. If the opening is detected in the audit log, the user will be granted offline access. The range of the Audit Trail can be set from anywhere between 1 day to 255 days.

The lock settings can be managed by site owners or site admin.

Are there default lock Settings? If so, what are they?

There are default settings that are applied to each lock that is attached. These settings can be adjusted according to specific preferences. For instance, if you would like to change the Open Time setting (that is the amount of time that the lock will stay unlocked until it is locked again), you can either customize it within the range of 1 second to 240 seconds, or you may opt to keep the default setting which is 7 seconds.

The following default lock settings are applied:

Open time: 7 seconds Easy office mode: not configured Offline access based on audit trail: 7 days

How can I change or edit the lock Settings?

You can change the default lock settings by logging into https://app.saltoks.com as a site owner or site admin. Then, navigate to the Locks page, select the lock you want to change the settings for and choose 'Settings' in the left hand side menu.

What does the "Offline Access based on Audit Trail" setting do?

This can best be explained using an example: The default setting for this setting is 7 days. This means that you allow the lock to look back 7 days prior in its internal audit log when it is unable to connect to the IQ to check for a successful opening using the credential provided. If the opening is detected in the audit log, the user will be granted Offline Access.

However, if for instance you have hired employees for a given amount of time and prefer to extend the Audit Trail, to grant them offline access when required, you may adjust the range to 60 days. The Audit Trail can be set from anywhere between 1 day to 255 days.

* It is advised to be aware of the possible consequences of setting a long time range for the Audit Trail, which may result in giving unwanted access. Whenever the IQ is offline, the Offline Access would be based on the audit logs. This means that if a user had successful access earlier which was later revoked, the access can still be granted depending on the number of days set for Audit Trail. It is possible, therefore, to change these settings based on your preference and according to your needs.

How can I change the batteries of my lock? (Cylinders)

Please Note: Replacing batteries of cylinder-type locks requires special tooling and is typically done by a certified installer. If you don't know who your installer is or want to find a new one, please contact SALTO Systems Support.

If you are equipped with the proper tool:

Use the cylinder tool to open the head of your cylinder. Remove the batteries, but be careful not to damage the shielding material. Replace the batteries with 4 new LR1 Alkaline ones. After placing the last battery, you should hear 2 beeps. If you do not hear the beeps, check if the batteries have been inserted correctly. If all is working, place back the cylinder head without damaging the electronics and connections. If the cylinder head is back in place, lock it again using the cylinder tool.

How can I change the batteries of my lock? (Escutcheons)

To change the batteries of your escutcheon-type lock, remove the back panel of the escutcheon. Please note that the screw at the bottom must be turned inwards to be able to remove the cover and outwards to mount it in place again. The screw stays attached to the lock. Once you have removed the back panel and the small cover of the battery compartment itself, replace the three batteries with new ones.

Recommended batteries for Escutcheon-type locks are Duracell Plus Power AAA (MN2400), Simply Duracell AAA (MN2400), Varta High Energy AAA (04903), Varta Longlife AAA (04103) and Varta Industrial AAA (04003).

When you put in the batteries, you should hear two short beeps. If you don't hear the beeps, check if you inserted the batteries correctly. After this, put back the cover for the battery compartment and the back panel.

How do I get inside my door if the battery status is critical?

You will get notified before the lock is starting to run out of battery.

The severity of these notifications varies from high, normal, low, to very low. It is highly recommended to change the battery before at least the "very low"' notification.

Once the batteries are approaching the very low level, each opening on the lock will first blink red a couple of times before opening as normal.

If the battery is drained fully, the only way to open it is by attaching an external battery pack. This can be obtained from your SALTO installer. After attaching the battery pack via the front of the lock, it will operate as normal.

Does the lock need reprogramming after changing the batteries?

Replacing batteries should not affect the lock's configuration or behavior. If the lock is not working after replacing the batteries, please check if the new batteries have been inserted correctly.

Please reach out to support if you still experience problems.

I'm having proximity issues, How close does a phone need to be to a lock to open it?

This is dependent on the lock type. In the case of a Wall reader with Near Detection Mode enabled, it's around 30 cm, and with it disabled, the distance is around 15 meters.

In the case of an escutcheon or cylinder you need to physically tap the lock with the back of your smartphone.

What does it mean if I receive the message: "The lock is already in use"?

When you are adding a lock, and you get the message: "The lock is already in use", first check for the lock in the Detached lock section under Site > Hardware.

If it is not there, check with support, and provide the Mac address or Device ID of the lock in question.

I moved the lock from IQ A to IQ B, but now I cannot get it online, How can I fix this?

When you remove the lock from the IQ, you should verify if the lock is in construction mode. Get a construction card (Bluetooth LE lock), or a random tag (RF lock), and present it to the lock in question. Then, review the following:

  1. If the lock opened, then the lock has been removed properly (Because a lock in free status will always open with any tag).
  2. If the lock rejected, then the lock is not properly disconnected.
  3. If the lock has stayed with the original IQ for some time, and failed to be disconnected properly, you would need to connect the lock back to the original IQ and disconnect it again.

What does it mean if I receive the message: "Operation not completed"?

When the user is trying to open or lock a GEO cylinder, and the lock did not react, and in the event or incident, the message shows: "Operation not completed", this means that the motor/clutch mechanism is blocked, or one of the connectors got broken, and it is not able to change the status of the door from locked to unlocked or unlocked to locked.

Please replace the cylinder in this scenario.

As a temporary solution, the user can try tapping on the lock head. This might unblock the motor for a short time allowing the user to enter or lock the door.
