General information and access methods

What is an access control system?

An access control system is a technology-based system that provides security solutions, allowing you to manage, monitor and control who goes where and at what time within an organization. This operates through modern electronic means as opposed to mechanical locks and keys. The system thereby provides centralized management and regulation, without the cost and complexity of physical access systems.

Door access control systems can restrict access to selected users in order to ensure the safety of inventory, secure intellectual property, and protect its users. Systems can be adapted to business needs and be implemented in coffee machines, printers and much more depending on your business type.

Furthermore, access control systems provide important data like the occupancy of your spaces, lock events, alarms and everything connecting to access points. They also offer the possibility of integration with the software your company uses for booking/scheduling, visitor management and operations.

What is a keyless entry?

Keyless entry is a way of entry without traditional mechanical keys or mechanical locks. Digital key, remote opening, and PIN all provide keyless entries, and tags are available for those who prefer to rely on a physical key.

The following is an overview of such keyless entry options:

  1. Digital key: Tap and unlock. With SALTO Bluetooth Low Energy locks you can unlock doors with digital keys. All you need to do is activate digital key in your KS app and tap your phone on the reader of the lock. Users can receive digital keys anytime and anywhere, making issuing and receiving access rights much easier and more flexible.

  2. Remote opening: Open doors from any distance. Letting tenants in is now more convenient than ever. SALTO KS lets you open doors from anywhere, anytime. Whether it's a visitor who arrived earlier than you or a new employee without a tag. You can unlock doors for your guests via remote opening functionality from anywhere around the world. All you need to do is swipe left!

  3. PIN: When opting for access with a PIN code, all you need is to enter your PIN code via the keypad to unlock, or generate and assign a secure and authentic PIN code for your guests to grant them entrance. This keyless entry provides a high level of enhanced security as well as convenience.

  4. Tags: The smart mechanical key tags represent the user's physical credentials to a lock. Every valid tag can lock and unlock. Tags are highly secured, by using a password and encrypted proximity fobs. Tags are convenient to open the door in case you don't have your phone on you all day. It's also a nice way to welcome a new tenant or guest. In case a tag gets lost you avoid wasting time and money on replacing the lock on the specific door. Block the tag and hand out a new one!

What are the benefits of using smart locks in your business or home?

With the use of smart locks, businesses or homes can be protected and regulated without the stress of forgetting to lock doors, losing keys, or potential break-ins. Access control systems allow varying levels of security whereby control is flexible and may be done anytime and from any place. Furthermore, the owner or administrator has full control and they may authorize users and grant specified levels of access using an intuitive interface.

With smart locks, it is even possible to gain activity insights in order to have complete visibility and notifications related to all use of smart locks on site.

In order to run your business or home with ease and offer the best user experience, smart lock systems also have the ability to integrate with useful and complementary software such as intercom and video surveillance.

For instance, SALTO KS offers KS Service integrations with Comelit and Eagle Eye Networks which enables the owner or manager of a building to offer tenants intercom and video surveillance services respectively. These include being notified about someone ringing your doorbell, having a live video/audio feed, and unlocking remotely.

What do you need to purchase in order for you to set up your SALTO KS access control system for your business?

SALTO KS sites are equipped with wireless SALTO locks. These locks can go on any door in the world, however unusual the door may be. SALTO offers a broad range of hardware, making smart access to any door possible, such as Escutcheons or Cylinders for main entry doors and internal meeting rooms, wall readers for all electric doors like gates and automatic doors.

If you are considering implementing KS as an access control system, your company needs to, at a bare minimum, acquire: A SALTO lock, an IQ, and a subscription to SALTO KS. tags are optional since remote openings or digital keys are a popular option. A repeater needs to be acquired when there are more than 10 meters in between the lock and the IQ.

Locks: There is an extensive range of locks available. With a wide variety of escutcheons and cylinders, SALTO locks are equipped to fit any door around the globe. Compact sized, wire-free and compatible with most European, Scandinavian and ANSI mortise locks and tubular latches.

Digital key: A digital key is the virtual equivalent of a tag. With a single download on a registered and verified smartphone, your guests can gain access to doors by means of digital key. Tapping the smartphone on the lock will do the trick. The smartphone and wireless Bluetooth LE Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) lock pair, and the lock is opened via Bluetooth LE. This way you can use your smartphone as a tag, opening the lock without relying on an active internet connection, which makes digital key as secure as using a physical tag.

IQ: The IQ is the central hub of your site. It receives all changes and settings from the SALTO KS application and ensures that all locks are updated within seconds. The IQ serves as the brain of your site, connects your wireless locks to the cloud and can be extended by adding additional repeaters if needed.

Tag: You can always use your smartphone to unlock doors, but as a second credential, you can also use tags. A tag is a physical device (contactless key fob) that works based on RFID. With a built-in secured chip, an opening can be triggered by directly presenting the tag to the lock. A tag replaces that ring of keys, and grants designated access to employees, guests or even cleaning services whenever it's appropriate for them to enter. Assign a tag to a user, and define when and where that tag can go.

Repeater: A repeater is an extension in case the signal doesn't cover the distance between IQ and locks. A maximum of 6 repeaters can be connected to an IQ, either directly to the IQ or through another repeater (for up to 3 layers).

Wall reader: The SALTO KS wall reader incorporates the cutting-edge design standard of the XS4 2.0 product range. In combination with the SALTO KS controller, it facilitates the expansion of SALTO access control benefits to all those doors where an offline electronic lock cannot be fitted, that is barriers, lifts, sliding doors or electronic gates to provide your facility with a complete security solution.

Why is cloud-based access control simpler?

Cloud-based access control systems allow companies to manage and control their doors and entry access through the internet, rather than physical computers in buildings and server rooms.

Having your access control system on the cloud helps businesses increase security and efficiency.

These characteristics make access control simpler as they ensure:

  1. The management and monitoring of access rights are possible across multiple locations and is able to adapt based on fluctuating workforce capacities.
  2. Software updates concerning security and new features are taken care of with cloud-based access control systems via automatic updates, saving both time and energy in system maintenance.
  3. These systems are made to be accessed and edited by multiple members making it possible to control access rights anytime and from anywhere, with open collaboration. The various admin rights available allow system operations to run efficiently.
  4. Cloud-based access control allows users to manage and monitor access remotely from anywhere they may be as long as they have a working internet or Bluetooth connection.
  5. These systems ensure that all access rights are stored centrally and protect data which is updated often.
  6. Lastly, access rights can be edited instantly according to your security needs.

Does my PIN code expire?

Yes, all PIN codes in SALTO KS expire after 90 days by default. Once it expires at the end of 90 days, we will assess if the PIN code is part of a valid Access Group. If it is, the expiration date is extended by 7 days and this continues until it is no longer part of a valid Access Group. Then, it will be deleted.

What is the reason why a different door opens when I try to unlock the door I want to open?

If you tried to open a lock, but a nearby wall reader opened, then there is an issue caused by interference that occurs with two or more wall readers installed in close proximity to each other. This can be solved by the Near Detection Mode feature, which when enabled, you do not risk the wrong wall reader receiving the signal of your presented digital key. Instead, the wall reader radius is reduced to avoid interference with the other mounted locks. The range of Bluetooth signal when it is enabled is 10-15 cm to be specific, but this may vary depending on the mobile device presented to the Wall reader.

The wall reader is asleep until a digital key or tag is presented within close proximity to it, after which it can successfully be activated and unlock your door.

In addition, enabling Near Detection Mode similarly helps to avoid the risk of a wall reader receiving the signal from a digital key that was activated in the distance and possibly an undesired credential.
